Bariatric Surgery Institute at McLaren Macomb earns Blue Distinction Center+ designation from BCBS

The Bariatric Surgery Institute at McLaren Macomb has been designated by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan as a Blue Distinction Center+ for Bariatric Surgery. Blue Distinction Centers for Specialty Care® is a directory created to identify facilities with proven expertise in delivering specialty care.

The Distinction Center Program was developed with input from the medical community and evaluates hospitals’ specialty care and their ability to deliver high-quality outcomes.

“The objective of our office is to ensure we deliver quality care and enhanced clinical outcomes to our patients,” said Dr. Carl Pesta, general and bariatric surgeon and medical director of the Bariatric Surgery Institute at McLaren Macomb. “My fellow surgeon, Dr. Michael D’Almeida, and I, along with our entire staff, work to hold ourselves to this high standard, which is a great benefit to our patients. Earning this designation is a distinction shared with our whole staff.”

As stated on the Blue Distinction Program website, “only those facilities that first meet nationally established, objective quality measures” will be considered for a Blue Distinction Center+ designation. The Bariatric Surgery Institute met those measurements to earn the designation, which includes patient post-operative care, follow-up and education.

Criteria also includes the expertise of the medical team, the number of times the facility has performed the procedure and the facility’s track record for procedure results, leading to fewer complications and readmissions than facilities without the designation.
