Karmanos Cancer Center receives overall 5-star rating on Medicare’s Care Compare website

Karmanos Cancer Center in Detroit now has a five-star overall rating, the highest rating possible, from the Centers of Medicare & Medicaid Services. The overall quality star rating compares the hospital’s performance to others across the country. The rating system includes five categories of quality: mortality, safety of care, readmission, patient experience and timely and effective care.

Medicare provides the star-rating of each hospital on its Care Compare website, a user-friendly interface where patients and caregivers can research and make informed decisions on their health choices, such as where they may want to seek care. Care Compare consistently shows performance data to ensure the availability of credible information about the care delivered in hospitals across the country. The more overall stars, the better a hospital performs in the five categories mentioned above.

“This overall star rating signifies the amazing care our staff and physicians provide our patients,” said Brian Gamble, president of Karmanos Cancer Hospital. “Every moment of a patient’s visit with us matters, from when they walk in the door, the bedside manner, the level of care they expect and receive and the aftercare support. A huge congratulations to our staff for making our hospital one of the best to seek cancer care in the state.”

Karmanos Cancer Center is the only free-standing hospital dedicated to cancer care in Michigan. As patients seek cancer care, the overall five-star rating helps Karmanos stand out as an outstanding cancer care center. Karmanos is ranked 8 out of 8 for patient satisfaction, which is based on results from the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems survey (HCAHPS), a public survey of patient perspectives on the care they received while receiving care at a hospital.
