The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) has honored Cheryl Grey, LMSW, social worker and care manager at the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute, with the Hematology-Oncology Social Worker of the Year Award. Grey’s award was presented during the opening session of this year’s Association of Oncology Social Work (AOSW) National Conference. This honor recognizes a hematology-oncology social worker who shows exceptional dedication, skill, and compassion in supporting patients and families battling blood cancers.
“Receiving this award is an honor,” said Grey. “I’m so grateful to be part of a team that truly cares about putting patients first, and I hope to continue making an impact on their lives each and every day.”
With a successful career spanning over 30 years, Grey has become a pillar of care and advocacy for cancer patients at Karmanos Cancer Institute in Detroit. Since joining Karmanos in 2007 as an oncology case manager, Grey has provided endless support and compassion to patients in the Hematology Oncology and Bone Marrow and Stem Cell Transplant Programs. Her professional journey also includes 15 years as a clinical social worker at Harper University Hospital, along with work in maternal-infant health programs in metro Detroit.
“Cheryl is an invaluable member of our oncology team,” said her longtime colleague and manager, Truvella Porter, LMSW, ACM, who wrote one of the nomination letters. “Her empathetic approach has helped patients navigate through one of the most challenging times in their lives, as she provides them with a listening ear, guidance and assistance.”
Grey plays a critical role on Karmanos’ multidisciplinary teams (MDTs), including the Bone Marrow and Stem Cell Transplant, Hematology Oncology and Phase I Clinical Trials MDTs. She is the primary contact for patients undergoing bone marrow transplants and CAR T-cell therapy, helping them navigate mental challenges and meeting all supportive care needs. Her calming presence and empathy for these patients has been crucial in helping them through their cancer journey.
Outside of her clinical work, Grey is a dedicated educator and mentor. She is a field advisor for Master of Social Work students from her alma mater, Wayne State University, in addition to Michigan State University. Her guidance and knowledge have helped shape the next generation of social workers.
Grey is a licensed clinical social worker and a certified oncology social worker through the Oncology Certified Social Worker (OCSW) program. She also volunteers in the community with organizations such as LLS, the New Day Foundation for Families, the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network, and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority’s Drake Educational Enrichment Program.
Her ability to establish strong partnerships with the community has led to increased resources and support for Karmanos patients.
“Cheryl never says no to an idea that will break down barriers for her patients,” said Lauren Fryzel, patient and community outreach senior manager for the Michigan and Indiana region of LLS. Fryzel also submitted a nomination letter for Grey. “She goes the extra mile to deliver groceries with other organizations as a volunteer and is truly the epitome of leading with heart.”
This award honors Grey’s professional accomplishments in addition to her continued dedication to all-encompassing care. Her recognition by LLS acknowledges the lives she has impacted and the legacy she continues to build at Karmanos.
