Ashley Miller, unit assistant at McLaren Greater Lansing, was honored with the BEE Award. The BEE award, which stands for “Be Extraordinary Every day,” recognizes health care team members who made an extraordinary difference in a patient's care or overall experience.
The nomination, submitted by a coworker, read as follows: “Ashley is the best unit assistant I have ever worked with throughout my many years as a nurse. Ashley is a hard worker (I am shocked if I ever see her sitting down during her shift). She is reliable, organized, communicates well with everyone, and is caring and dedicated. She constantly jumps in to assist with patient care, transporting, and ensuring our patients are well cared for and safe. Ashley does not just check the boxes with this list. She goes above and beyond in all these categories of being a “BEE” and more, all while keeping a positive attitude. That is what truly makes her stand out. Our patients and our department are better off thanks to her. She definitely deserves and is overdue for some recognition.”
Miller was recognized by hospital leadership and coworkers as she received a certificate commending her for “being extraordinary every day”. She received a pin, treats, and a sculpture that symbolizes care and comfort.
Miller has worked at McLaren Greater Lansing as a unit assistant on the third floor in the same-day surgery department for two years. Her passion for caring for others originated in her youth, specifically when she helped her grandmother when she was ill, which inspired her decision to pursue a career in health care.
“I really love my job; I get to help people, be a listening ear, and simply be there for them when they need me,” said Miller.

While nursing staff are often recognized with the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses, the BEE Award was created to symbolize the exceptional care and services delivered by hospital team members outside of the nursing profession.
