Register today for appointments during Screening Saves Lives
The Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute invites the community to the Screening Saves Lives: Cancer Screening and Educational Event. On Saturday, Oct. 7, 2023, from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m., Karmanos will provide colon screening consultations, head and neck examinations, lung cancer screenings, mammograms, skin cancer screenings, and wellness checks at their main location at 4100 John R. Street in Detroit.
“Last year, we were able to see over 160 people who received screenings, consultations and were able to schedule appointments for follow-up screenings right on the spot,” said April Brown, director of Concierge Services and Screening and Prevention at Karmanos. “Finding cancer in the early stages is crucial because it’s the most curable. If you have forgotten or have put off scheduling a screening due to busy everyday life, this is the opportunity to put yourself first and check on your health.”
This year, Karmanos not only expanded the types of screenings available, but they’ve added self-care activities that are free to attendees. Yoga movement classes and massages will be available at no cost. There will also be food stations, a free pop-up market, prevention and education opportunities with staff and experts, interactive exhibits, raffles and giveaways. Plus, Karmanos will provide information about their Screening and Prevention Program, genetic counseling, women’s wellness clinic and clinical trials.
The Screening Saves Lives event started as an idea in 2022. Though screening rates have improved since the pandemic, there is always an opportunity to continue educating the community and providing services to keep them on track for their important screenings.
Karmanos specialists will be on hand to help eligible women understand the services they qualify for through the Michigan Breast & Cervical Cancer Control Program (BCCCP). This program gives free breast and cervical cancer screenings at no cost to patients. Those who qualify for this service are female, earning an income of 250% under the federal poverty level; uninsured or underinsured; age 21-39 and are referred to the program with an abnormal Pap test or clinical breast exam which requires a diagnostic service; or age 40-64 and in need of a breast, cervical, diagnostic or treatment service.
Screening Saves Lives: Cancer Screening and Educational Event is open to the public. Attendees who are requesting a cancer screening or consultation must pre-register for an appointment by calling 1-800-KARMANOS. Driver’s license or state ID and insurance cards are required for screening at the event. All attendees must be 12 or older.
If participants would like to take part in the activities happening during the event, but do not want a cancer screening, they must register to attend at karmanos.org/screeningsaves.
