Lydia Choi, M.D., breast surgical oncologist and member of the Breast Cancer Multidisciplinary Team at the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute, has been named among more than 8,200 physicians as a Castle Connolly 2025 Exceptional Women in Medicine, an honor she has received consecutively since 2019. The list includes the top 2% of female physicians across the country. The women on this list have demonstrated leadership, expertise and dedication to their fields. In addition, these physicians lead and participate in research and academics, volunteering, training other doctors at a top institution, and pioneering innovations in their specialties.
Dr. Choi has been at Karmanos since 2010. She is a scientific member of the Tumor Biology and Microenvironment Research Program at Karmanos and an assistant professor of surgery at Wayne State University’s School of Medicine. Dr. Choi specializes in breast cancer and surgical benign breast disease, with research interests in the clinical management of the axilla, prognostic markers for breast cancer metastasis, and new imaging methods for breast cancer.
Dr. Choi serves as a diplomate of the American Board of Surgery and is a member of the American College of Surgeons, the American Society of Breast Disease, and the Society of Surgical Oncology. In addition to being named to the Exceptional Women in Medicine by Castle Connolly for seven years, Dr. Choi has been named a Castle Connolly Top Doctor since 2016 and an Hour Detroit Magazine Top Doctor in 2018, 2019, and 2021 through 2024.
