November Is National Hospice and Palliative Care Month

Hospice care focuses on quality of life, not length of life.

At McLaren Caro Region, our Hospice/Respite team offers compassionate care for patients and families during a life-limiting illness.

Here, we believe hospice is never about giving up hope. Instead, the MCR Hospice/Respite team supports personal choices and experiences, controls pain and discomfort, and helps maintain patient dignity.

November is National Hospice and Palliative Care Month. At McLaren Caro Region, we celebrate life every month by offering families a higher standard of personalized care focusing on:

  • End-of-life care focused on the person, not the disease.
  • Superior care for patients and their families.
  • Comfort care, also known as palliative care.
  • Improved quality of life.
  • Individual care planning with a focus on the beliefs, wishes, and values of each patient and family.

Families throughout Tuscola County trust the MCR Hospice/Respite program and its staff of highly trained and compassionate professionals including physicians, nurses, social workers, registered dietitians, and pharmacists. Our team is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Why Choose McLaren Hospice/Respite?

Our community-based, not-for-profit program offers families the unique skills and expertise of a board-certified chief medical officer. Our highly skilled, knowledgeable and caring nurses understand how to support both families and patients as the end of life nears.

For us, hospice is a philosophy, not a place. Sometimes a hospice patient’s needs become more than a family can handle at home. To ease the family’s concerns and make the patient as comfortable as possible, McLaren Caro Region offers hospice families the use of a private, home-like room within the hospital.

In hospice, family members often step into the role of caregiver. While it’s a blessing to care for your loved ones, it can lead to burnout. In this private respite room, families can leave behind the caregiver role and instead enjoy time together.

How Do I Know it’s Time for Hospice?

At any time during a life-limiting illness, it’s OK to discuss all your care alternatives with your health care provider. By law, the decision to enter hospice belongs to the patient or their representative. You should discuss hospice care with your physician, trusted health care professionals, family, and friends.

If you aren’t sure how to start the conversation, call our team. We’re happy to answer all your questions so you feel prepared to discuss options with your loved ones.

How Much Does Hospice Care Cost?

At McLaren, we believe no family should have to worry about the bill when considering hospice care. No patient will ever be denied care due to lack of financial resources. We also accept Medicare, Medicaid, and most private insurances. Our staff is happy to explain your coverage and benefits in full detail.

What Do Others Say About the MCR Hospice Program?

“My mom utilized the Hospice room for 5 days. The staff was great and they became part of our family as the week progressed. We never had to call them twice for help. They were in every hour to check on mom and they were always reassuring us whenever we had questions. The kitchen staff even brought in coffee, muffins, and water.

Due to her insurance, mom was only allowed to stay in that room for 5 days. We were getting worried about where we would take her as she continued to decline but Administration assured us that they would take care of things and we wouldn’t have to move her. They just relieved all our anxiety and pain and mom passed on the morning of her 5th day. We could not ask for a better place for her to spend her last week of life.

Thank you McLaren Caro Region!”
