Rotations

Didactics

Our core didactic sessions are held every Tuesday from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. These sessions feature a well-rounded mix of resident, fellow and faculty lectures, ABFM board review, EKG and X-ray interpretation, and guest speakers. We also incorporate interactive elements such as procedure workshops, journal clubs, and discussions on real-world topics like physician finance, value-based care, wellbeing, and career development.

As part of our didactic curriculum, we hold dedicated hands-on procedure workshops designed to help residents build confidence and competence across a wide range of in-office procedures. These sessions provide individualized instruction in a supportive, small-group setting.

Dermatologic procedures: Suturing, incision and drainage (I&D), excisions, shave and punch biopsies, cryotherapy, and electrocautery
Gynecologic procedures: Nexplanon and IUD placement, Pap smears, colposcopy, endometrial biopsy
Orthopedic procedures: Joint injections and aspirations, splinting, and casting
Other common office procedures: EKG interpretation, pulmonary function testing (PFT), ankle-brachial index (ABI) testing, orthostatic blood pressure evaluation, urinalysis interpretation, etc.

These workshops are an integral part of resident education and help ensure readiness for independent practice.

As a member hospital of the Michigan State University Graduate Medical Education Alliance (formerly the Statewide Campus System) our residents gain access to a wide network of educational resources. The MSU Graduate Medical Education Alliance connects 34 member institutions, including 47 hospitals and multiple federally qualified health centers throughout Michigan, to collectively enhance postdoctoral medical education.

The Alliance also offers a variety of specialized educational programs, including courses on dermatologic procedures, orthopedic and sports medicine, advanced life-saving in obstetrics, colposcopy and women’s health, as well as business and employment topics.

Lifestyle Medicine

In addition to obtaining board certification in Family Medicine, our residents receive comprehensive training in Lifestyle Medicine through the American College of Lifestyle Medicine. There is also an opportunity to be board-certified in Lifestyle Medicine. This training is a three-year, longitudinal, evidence-based curriculum where residents focus on incorporating nutrition, stress regulation, exercise, and other measures into medicine. Residents are encouraged to use these treatment options throughout their training and, ultimately, in their practices after graduation.

Continuity Clinic

The FM resident continuity clinic takes place at The Baldwin Family Medicine Clinic, located at 1701 Baldwin Avenue in Pontiac, Michigan. This clinic serves as the cornerstone of our outpatient training, where residents develop long-term relationships with patients and experience the full spectrum of family medicine.

The Baldwin Family Medicine Clinic is proud to partner with Honor Community Health, Oakland County’s largest Federally Qualified Healthcare Center (FQHC). Through this partnership, residents care for a diverse and often underserved patient population, gaining invaluable experience in community-based primary care, chronic disease management, preventive services, and care coordination.

This setting reinforces our mission to train compassionate, culturally competent physicians who are prepared to serve in any environment—from underserved urban clinics to rural health systems.

How to Apply

Application Method

McLaren Oakland Family Medicine Residency Program participates in the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) National Resident Match Program (NRMP) and will only accept applications through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). Paper applications are not accepted.

Eligibility Requirements

All applications must meet the following eligibility requirements:

Ability to carry out the duties as required of the residency program.
Proficient in the English language, to include reading printed and cursive English, writing (printing or typing) English text, understanding spoken English on conversational and medical topics, speaking English on conversational and medical topics as determined by the program director and/or selection committee.
Applicants must be graduates of medical school within the past 5 years from:
- A medical school in the United States or Canada, accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME); or,
- A college of osteopathic medicine in the United States, accredited by the (COCA); or,
- A medical school outside of the United States or Canada and must have a currently valid certificate from the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates prior to appointment

Selection Process

The Residency program uses both objective and subjective criteria to select applicants. The Program Director and Selection Committee are responsible for selection and appointment of residents to the program. The application process meets all requirements of the Equal Employment Opportunity and the Americans with Disability Acts and does not discriminate with regard to sex, race, age, religion, color, national origin, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity or veteran’s status.

The selection committee selects applicants to interview. Invitations to interview will be made on a rolling basis as applications are reviewed from ERAS.

Criteria for selection include:

Confirmation of eligibility requirements
Performance on standardized medical tests
Must have successfully passed the Level 1 and Level II licensing examination appropriate for the program (COMLEX-USA or USMLE).
Overall academic performance in medical school
Recent clinical training or experience
Demonstrated ability to choose goals and complete the tasks necessary to achieve those goals
Maturity and emotional stability
Honesty, integrity and reliability
Professionalism, verbal and written communication skills
Demonstrated interest and motivation to pursue a career in the specialty of Family Medicine

Following the interview, the Program Selection Committee (Program Director, Program Administrator, at least 2 members of the Faculty, and Chief Resident(s)) reviews the applicant’s file and written interview evaluations and rank the applicant based on the criteria above.

Following completion of discussion by the Program Selection Committee, the Program Director compiles a final rank list in priority order for submission to the NRMP.

Interviews

Interviews will be held virtually only. Applicants meeting the selection criteria will be contacted for interviews by email. Interviews are held in October.

An applicant invited for an interview should review and be familiar with the terms, conditions and benefits of appointment (and employment) including financial support, vacation, professional leave, parental leave, sick leave, professional liability insurance, hospital and health insurance, disability insurance, and other insurance benefits for the resident and their family, and conditions under which living quarters, meals and laundry or the equivalents are provided. This information will be provided to all interviewed candidates on the date of interview. Applicants can also access much of this information through the Resident Handbook at www.mclaren.org/oakland/gme.

The interview consists of approximately four hours with faculty members, the program coordinator, and resident representatives.

Scholarly Activities

At the McLaren Oakland Family Medicine Residency, we are deeply committed to fostering a culture of inquiry, lifelong learning, and academic growth. Our residents actively engage in scholarly activities that enhance their clinical expertise and contribute to the broader medical community.

Residents benefit from a rich educational environment that includes collaboration with the MSU Graduate Medical Education Alliance and access to Southeastern Michigan Continuing Medical Education (SEMCME) resources. They participate in monthly journal clubs held both during morning didactic sessions and evening meetings throughout the Metro Detroit area, providing diverse opportunities for academic discussion and networking.

Our program offers comprehensive research support through access to our PhD statisticians, dedicated library research services, and assistance with multiple research applications. Faculty mentors provide hands-on guidance throughout the research process, ensuring residents are well-equipped to pursue meaningful scholarly projects.

These resources and opportunities empower our residents to explore topics that ignite their curiosity and impact patient care, preparing them to become innovative leaders in Family Medicine.

Mark Schury, DO - Program Director

Dr. Mark Schury has been leading the McLaren Oakland Family Medicine Residency since 2007, bringing energy, experience, and a deep commitment to resident education. Board certified in Family Medicine and Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (OMT), he blends clinical excellence with a passion for teaching the next generation of physicians. A proud graduate of the Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1997, Dr. Schury completed his traditional rotating internship at Mount Clemens General Hospital and went on to finish residency training at Pontiac Osteopathic Hospital in 2000. He then spent ten years building a successful private practice in Waterford, Michigan, before following his calling into academic medicine full time. He’s especially interested in medical education, preventive care, osteopathic principles, office procedures and helping residents understand the financial realities of life in medicine. When he's not at work, you'll find him fly fishing for trout in Michigan’s rivers, tending to a collection of bonsai trees and plants, woodworking or forging metal in the workshop, or enjoying lake life with his family in Caseville. He and his wife Susan are the proud parents of three boys, two dogs and a tortoise.
Kelly Mason, DO

Dr. Kelly Mason joined the MOH FM Residency Program as a core faculty in 2018 and became the Associate Program Director in 2020. She is a 2005 graduate of Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine and completed her residency at Genesys Regional Medical Center in 2008. She was the chief resident and was also awarded the STFM Resident Teacher Award in residency. Dr. Mason is AOA board certified in Family Medicine and OMT. Following residency, she split her time between a private practice and as a faculty at another FM residency. After four years in private practice, she chose to focus her efforts solely on teaching clinically. Her interests include women’s health, pediatrics, physician wellness, and medical missions. She has participated in medical mission trips to Malawi, India, Mexico, Honduras and Peru. Outside of medicine she enjoys camping, going to the beach, home improvement projects, and spending time with her husband and their four children.
Munni Deb, PhD

Dr. Munni Deb joined the McLaren-Oakland Family Medicine (FM) Residency Program as the Academic Program Behavioral Health Director and a core faculty in February 2021. She earned her Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology and a Graduate Certificate in College Teaching from an American Psychological Association (APA) accredited program at The University of Iowa (2015). Dr. Deb completed her doctoral internship at Michigan State University Counseling Center (2015), an APA-accredited program. Prior to joining McLaren, Dr. Deb provided training and supervision in Behavioral Medicine to FM residents at an ACGME residency program in Detroit, MI. Professionally, Dr. Deb identifies herself as a clinician and an educator. Her teaching philosophy recognizes that one of the keys to medical resident success is an educator’s ability to inspire residents to connect with their values and purpose in medicine. In her free time, Dr. Deb enjoys traveling, biking, working out, nature walks, being by the lake, and spending quality time with her family.
