Information for Applicants

The residency and fellowship programs use both objective and subjective criteria to select applicants. The Program Directors and selection committees are responsible for selection of residents to the program. The application process meets all requirements of the Equal Employment Opportunity and the Americans with Disability Acts. Each program determines its own eligibility requirements, application processes, and interview structure as detailed within their program-specific information.

Benefits

  • Health Insurance: McLaren Oakland offers medical coverage through McLaren Health Advantage. Our medical plan is offered for single, two-person, and family coverage.
  • Vision Plan: The vision plan is through EyeMed Vision Care covers a complete eye exam, as well as frames and lenses or contact lenses (co-pays apply).
  • Life Insurance: Life insurance includes coverage for accidental death and dismemberment. Interns/Residents/Fellows are covered for life insurance in the amount of one time their annual salary, with a maximum of $150,000. Residents/Fellows may purchase additional life insurance for themselves and family members at group rates.
  • Long-Term Disability Insurance: Residents/Fellows are eligible for Long-Term Disability when they become seriously ill or otherwise disabled (non-occupational). When qualifying for LTD, Interns/Residents/Fellows will receive weekly disability benefits equivalent to 60% (up to $5,000 monthly) of base hourly rate, beginning on the 181st day of disability. McLaren Oakland provides this at no cost to Residents/Fellows.
  • Delta Dental Insurance: Coverage ranges from 50-100% for preventative, x-rays, fillings, minor restorative; major restorative, bridges, and dentures with a $1,000-$1,500 per person maximum annual benefit, depending on benefit selection.
  • Other Insurance: Worker's compensation insurance is provided by the Hospital at no cost to Residents/Fellows.
  • Leave of Absence: Residents/Fellows may be entitled to benefits under the Hospital's Family and Medical Leave of Absence policy ("FMLOA"), as may be amended from time to time. Other medical or personal unpaid leave may be granted in accordance with human resource and/or medical education policy. Makeup time and/or repeat of training is determined by the Director of Medical Education and applicable specialty requirements.
  • Reimbursement of Educational Expenses: Residents/Fellows may receive an educational stipend to be used to offset expenses to attend conferences, pay for professional society memberships, or to purchase textbooks, journal subscriptions, and/or computer hardware/software. Annual stipend amounts are: $1,000 for PGY-1 and $1,500 for PGY-2 and above. Funds will be disbursed twice per year, the first half on or about November 1st and the remainder on or about May 1st. Funds will be withheld if all required paperwork, logs, assigned modules, etc. are not completed prior to the disbursement date.
  • Vacation: Residents/Fellows receive a maximum of twenty days of paid time off per contract year.
  • Additional Benefits:
    • BCLS and ACLS certification are provided at the hospital.
    • Meal Allowance – A meal stipend, while on duty at McLaren Oakland, is provided via a meal card system; some restrictions and limitations may apply.
    • Liability Insurance - Coverage for Residents/Fellows performing their job responsibilities is provided.
    • Parking Privileges - Free parking is provided.
    • Workers Compensation Insurance - Personal protection against loss of income resulting from work-related injuries or accidents is included.
    • Clothing Allowance - White coats are provided and laundered upon request.

DISCLAIMER: The Graduate Medical Education Trainee Physician Agreement is posted here as "sample only" to give applicants an idea of what to expect as a contracted employee of McLaren. This agreement is reviewed annually and thus the language is subject to change.

An official contract will be distributed to all matched residents and fellows as part of an onboarding checklist.

Application Procedure

Applicants should submit their application material by using the Electronic Resident Application Service (ERAS). This is the only avenue by which applications will be considered. Candidates will not get special consideration by circumventing the process and emailing the program director or graduate medical education coordinator. This behavior is highly discouraged.

All applicants must be authorized to work in the USA, or must be a Canadian citizen or Canadian permanent resident who is eligible for J-1 visa sponsorship.

COVID-19 Vaccines

McLaren Health Care complies with the healthcare worker vaccine mandate, which requires all workers, including residents, fellows, and visiting learners to be fully vaccinated as of March 15, 2022.
