McLaren Residency & Fellowship Programs

Program Information:

The purpose of the four-year residency in Anesthesiology at McLaren Greater Lansing is to provide training which will enable a resident who completes this program to render full care to anyone with conditions which fall within the purview of practice in anesthesiology. The residency program at McLaren Greater Lansing is designed to provide progressive learning experiences that develop the attitudes, skills and knowledge of a physician to efficiently provide quality anesthesiology. The basic principle of this program is to provide advanced and concentrated training in anesthesiology. All teaching functions are under the direction of a program director who is certified by the American Board of Anesthesiologists (ABA). The Department of Anesthesiology at McLaren Greater Lansing pledges to educate resident physicians in all areas of anesthesiology knowledge, clinical and technical skills and professional attitudes included in the six (6) core competencies mandated by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. The ultimate goal is to graduate accomplished anesthesiologists who meet the requirements to become certified anesthesiologists who are proficient to practice anesthesiology in either an academic institution or in private practice. The Anesthesiology Residency program at McLaren Greater Lansing is directly affiliated with the Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine (MSUCOM).

Program Information:

The Cardiology Fellowship Program at MGL aims to provide comprehensive advanced training in the care of cardiovascular patients. Fellows will graduate from the McLaren Greater Lansing Cardiovascular Disease Program with a strong working knowledge of all sub-specialties within cardiovascular medicine, including diagnostic and procedural methods of cardiac electrophysiology, heart failure, cardiac transplant, cardiac imaging (CMR, CT, Echo, Nuclear), congenital (adult, pediatric), and clinical research. All fellows will leave the training program with the necessary clinical and procedural skills to successfully enter into advanced sub-specialty training programs if they so choose or practice independently as general cardiologists. Fellows will graduate with a solid exposure to clinical research acquired by integrating them into ongoing faculty research projects or in the development of their individual projects fostered through faculty mentorship. Fellows will participate in at least one scholarly project per year. All fellows will leave the training program functioning as a competent general cardiologist with a solid work ethic and professional demeanor whether that be in academic or private clinical practice settings. Educate physicians who seek and achieve board certification of >80% pass rate within 2 years of matriculation into practice.

Program Information:

The Family Medicine Residency Program at McLaren Greater Lansing (MGL) is approved by the American College of Osteopathic Family Practice (ACOFP) and the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). The residency program includes three years of postgraduate training with the primary site of training being McLaren Greater Lansing and the Family Medicine Residency Clinic. The core rotations are completed at the MGL hospital and select MGL approved outpatient locations. Elective rotations are done within the greater Lansing area unless otherwise arranged by the resident and approved by the program director. Osteopathic principles and practices are incorporated into all learning experiences in the residency program.

Program Information:

The Gastroenterology Fellowship Program at MGL is designed to provide an exceptional educational experience that ensures our fellows graduate with the ability to provide the highest quality, comprehensive, and compassionate care to patients. To achieve this, the Fellows are provided a progressive experience that includes increased responsibility given over the course of the training program. The fellows will receive specialty training in Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Hepatology, Gastrointestinal Motility, Outpatient Endoscopy, and Advanced Endoscopy. All fellows will graduate from the training program with the necessary clinical and procedural skills to successfully practice independently or at an academic institution. The MGL Gastroenterology Fellows will graduate having received exposure to clinical research acquired by integrating them into ongoing faculty research projects or in the development of their own individual projects, fostered through faculty mentorship and collaboration. Each fellow will participate in at least one scholarly project per year. Each fellow will graduate the training program functioning as a competent gastroenterologist with a solid work-ethic and professional demeanor that will allow them to be successful in academic or private clinical practice settings. The program will educate physicians who seek and achieve board certification within 2 years of matriculation into practice.

Program Information:

The General Surgery Residency Program aims to provide a clinical learning environment for development of the skills, knowledge, and attitudes necessary to take personal responsibility for the individual care of patients. An inclusive environment is facilitated where residents can interact with patients under the guidance and supervision of highly qualified and approved faculty members who contribute value, context, and meaning to those interactions. Our goal is to instill our graduates with traits of compassion, professionalism, leadership, community service, awareness of quality outcomes, cost containment, best practices, commitments, and personal mental and physical well-being. Our objective is to ensure that all graduating residents achieve optimal standard levels of medical knowledge, clinical and surgical skills, clinical reasoning and judgement, time management and organization, and patient and community commitment.

Program Information:

The McLaren Greater Lansing Hematology and Medical Oncology fellowship is fully accredited by the ACGME and offers combined fellowship leading to board eligibility in Hematology and Oncology. During the first year, fellows are predominately involved with the care of hematology and oncology patients. In the second year, fellows are encouraged to develop a research project with one of the faculty members.

Program Information:

The Internal Medicine Residency Program at McLaren Greater Lansing is committed to developing future leaders in Internal Medicine and its sub-specialties. Consistent with ACGME Institutional and Program Requirements, along with McLaren Health Care Corporation’s mission, we strive to educate residents in the comprehensive assessment and management of disease processes related to Internal Medicine and its sub-specialties. Our program achieves this by providing an essential foundation for learning and promoting an environment of inquiry. The program educates physicians in all areas of Internal Medicine through direct patient contact in both an inpatient and outpatient setting as well as encouraging scholarly activity. The clinical setting exposes the fellows to the diverse population located in the Mid-Michigan/Greater Lansing community. Quality outcomes and cost awareness is incorporated into training for best valued healthcare practices. A balance between training, service, and scholarly activity is maintained while offering comprehensive educational programs both in-house and at participating institutions. Academic activities such as quality improvement participation and research is a requirement of the program to promote an environment of inquiry and encourage lifelong learning.

Program Information:

The purpose of the four-year residency in obstetrics/gynecology/gynecologic surgery at MGL is to provide training which will enable a resident who completes this program to render full care to anyone with conditions which fall within the purview of practice in women’s health care in the areas of obstetrics, gynecology, and gynecologic surgery.

Program Information:

The purpose of the Orthopedic Surgery Residency Training Program is to provide the resident with the knowledge, clinical, and surgical skills in all areas of orthopedic surgery necessary to ethically practice either academic or community orthopedic surgery at the highest possible level of competence by the completion of the training program. In 2020, the program achieved Continued Accreditation from the ACGME. The program is in consortium with Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine Statewide Campus System (MSUCOM-SCS) and provides educational programs consisting of structured lectures and a basic science course.

The McLaren Greater Lansing Pulmonary Disease and Critical Care Medicine fellowship is committed to developing future leaders in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine. Consistent with ACGME Institutional and Program requirements along with McLaren Health Care Corporation’s mission, we strive to educate fellows in the comprehensive assessment and management of critically ill patients. Our program achieves this by providing an essential foundation for learning and promoting an environment of inquiry throughout the three-year fellowship program.
