Awards, recognitions and overall successes of McLaren Health Care Graduate Medical Education programs.

McLaren-Michigan State University partnership prospers

In 2021, McLaren Health Care Chief Academic Officer Dr. Robert Flora and Dr. Randi Stanulis, the leader of Michigan State University College of Human Medicine’s Office of Medical Education Research and Development, OMERAD, partnered to launch an educational faculty development program.

Motivated to improve the clinical learning experience, the program aims to provide leadership experience for clinicians in teaching programs to create environments in which learners and clinicians want to remain.

Twelve clinicians across multiple McLaren sites were brought together to collaborate on what builds a strong learning environment. The resulting program has two options: a fellowship for new participants and an Academy of Teaching Scholars for returning participants.

Across the two programs, 15 clinicians are currently participating.

McLaren Flint internal medicine resident earns AHA’s Paul Dudley White International Scholar Award

McLaren Flint internal medicine resident Dr. Basel Abdelazeem received the Paul Dudley White International Scholar Award in recognition of his showing at the American Heart Association’s Scientific Sessions 2022, also known as #AHA22.

Earning the honor for having the highest ranked abstracts, Dr. Abdelazeem made two poster presentations and an oral presentation, with all abstracts published in the AHA’s journal, Circulation.

McLaren Bay Region family medicine residents take top honors at MAOFP Winter 2023

A pair of McLaren Bay Region family medicine residents, Dr. Margaux Zanetti and Dr. Peter Huynh, were each awarded first place for their respective presentations at the Winter 2023 retreat of the Michigan Association of Osteopathic Family Physicians, MAOFP, in mid-January.

In the research category, Dr. Huynh earned first for ‘Does a physician-led Rapid Response and Code Blue team improve patient care, quality, and survival at a large-size, community-based Michigan hospital?’

Dr. Margaux Zanetti earned top honors for her case report ‘Rapidly Progressing Ascending Paralysis.’

McLaren Macomb emergency residents make holiday presentation at local elementary school

The McLaren Macomb emergency medicine residents traditionally get together before the holidays to perform an act of community kindness.

In year’s past, the group would collectively assemble several bicycles for donation to local shelters. In 2022, though, they were motivated to undertake more of a community involvement initiative.

On Dec. 15, 15 emergency medicine resident physicians spent the morning at Peck Elementary in Centerline. To an assembled group of third, fourth and fifth graders, they first led them through a presentation of the importance of personal healthcare on their overall wellbeing before describing what it takes to make a career in healthcare.

They then led a hands-on demonstration of several standard tests (listening to the heart, checking blood pressure, splinting sprained joints among others), before, as a way to promote healthy living through physical activity, donating gym equipment to the school and students.

McLaren Oakland Medical Education Wellbeing Committee collects, donates items for patients in-need

The Medical Education Wellbeing Committee of McLaren Oakland organized and hosted drives at multiple locations to collect clothing, blankets and other items that could then be donated to patients in-need who had sought care at the Pontiac hospital’s emergency department.

Through the generosity of physicians, residents and staff, several bags of donations and more than $400 in cash donations were collected to support and further the committee’s cause.

Director of corporate scholarly inquiry recognized with article of the year

Carlos Rios-Bedoya, ScD, MPH, the McLaren Health Care director of corporate scholarly inquiry, was recognized by the American Journal of Epidemiology, who honored him with its 2021 Article of the Year distinction.

Dr. Rio-Bedoya’s article ‘Design and Implementation of PROSPECT: Puerto Rico Observational Study of Psychosocial, Environment, and Chronic Disease Trends,’ was recognized by the publication’s editors as one of its best of the year.
