Proton Therapy for Brain and Central Nervous System Cancer

Cancers Treated: Brain and Central Nervous System Tumors

Brain and Central Nervous System Cancer

Treating brain and spinal cord tumors can be challenging because the goal is not only to attack the tumor, but to do so with minimal impact to surrounding healthy tissue.

Why proton therapy

Proton therapy precisely targets tumors, with proton particles programmed to travel to the tumor, then stop. This precision is critical, because it virtually eliminates the “exit dose” of radiation that is inevitable with traditional photon radiation treatments. The risk from damage with protons is even smaller than the risk with very precise photon pencil beams used in stereotactic radiosurgery.

More about brain and spinal cord tumors

Most brain and spinal cord tumors are benign. The lifetime risk of developing a malignant tumor in these areas is relatively low- less than one percent, according to The American Cancer Society. General symptoms include headache, nausea, vomiting, blurred vision, balance issues, personality or behavior changes, seizures, and drowsiness. These signs and symptoms may develop gradually and become worse over time.
