2019 McLaren Port Huron Scholarships

Continuous learning strengthens professional skills and builds career potential. Investment in professional development also attracts and retains the best and brightest employees. It's a win-win for McLaren Port Huron and its workforce.

McLaren Port Huron offers several scholarships to employees who are committed to the lifelong learning and career development process. These funds are available because of generous employees who donate to the ETC and community donors who have an expressed interest in supporting the enrichment of health care professionals.

If you are pursuing a college degree in the health care field and would like to apply for a McLaren Port Huron health care scholarship, the following scholarships are awarded to students to assist with tuition, purchase of books, lab fees or room and board expenses.

  • Foundation Nursing Scholarship
  • ETC Scholarship (MPH Employees)
  • Employee Scholarship (MPH Employees)
  • Shirley Jardine Carter Memorial Scholarship for Physical Therapy

Recipients will be announced by June 14. Recipients may be eligible to apply for renewal. Students from the Blue Water Area will be given first consideration.

Application procedure:

Applications may be obtained from the following locations:

  • McLaren Port Huron Human Resources Department

Applications must be received complete by May 25 and include the following attachments:

  • Completed application – must include Social Security Number
  • Confirmation of acceptance into an accredited qualifying program
  • Most recent official transcript/report card
  • Letter of support from instructor or counselor
  • Letter of support of your choosing (i.e., personal, employer, etc.)
  • Please Note: If the above information is not submitted at the time of application, we will return the application to you as incomplete.

McLaren Port Huron Auxiliary Scholarships

The Auxiliary is offering two opportunities for scholarships:

    Academic Scholarship

    McLaren Port Huron Auxiliary scholarships have been created to assist students attending an accredited college/University, who are studying for a career in a health care profession. Scholarships are awarded to assist with tuition.

    • Applicants must be a resident of St. Clair, Sanilac or Huron County.
    • Applications must be submitted by Friday, May 24, 2019 and must include the following attachments:
      • Current college transcript
      • At least one letter of recommendation
      • A current bio of yourself

    Seminar/Conference Scholarship

    McLaren Port Huron Auxiliary is offering a scholarship for McLaren Port Huron Employees who are planning to attend a seminar or conference. One (1) scholarship, up to $2,000.00, will be awarded. The scholarship has the following criteria:

    • Applicant must be an employee of McLaren Port Huron for a minimum of 2 years
    • Applicant must be assigned 20 hours or more per week
    • Applicant must obtain written support of both their Manager and Director
    • Applications may be obtained from the McLaren Port Huron Gift Shop or online by clicking this link, and must be submitted by Friday, May 24, 2019.

2018 McLaren Port Huron Scholarships Awarded

Continuous learning strengthens professional skills and builds career potential. Investment in professional development also attracts and retains the best and brightest employees. It’s a win-win for McLaren Port Huron and its workforce.

McLaren Port Huron and its healthcare partners have awarded $47,500 in scholarships to 24 students pursuing degrees in professions represented within the hospital and community. Since 1988, 462 recipients have received $530,750 through the scholarship program. The scholarships are funded by the McLaren Port Huron Auxiliary, McLaren Port Huron Employees That Care Club, McLaren Port Huron Foundation, McLaren Port Huron Employees and Marwood Nursing & Rehab.

The 2018 scholarships and recipients are:

  • McLaren Port Huron Auxiliary Scholarships: Georgia Aebel of Carsonville is a RN in the Mental Health Unit, Tammy Falleti of Ira is a Certified Surgical First Assistant in Surgical Services, Ashley Fletcher of Fort Gratiot, Kelli Mollan of Yale is a RN Case Manager at the Yale Veteran’s Clinic, and Lindsey West of Burtchville is a Surgical Technologist in Surgical Services. Joshua Koehn of Port Huron is the Patient Advocate.
  • McLaren Port Huron Employees That Care Club (ETC) Scholarships: Jean Boland of Port Huron is a RN in Selective Care; Ellie Kercher of Port Huron is a nurse aide in the Emergency Department; Danielle Mackey of Kenockee is a nurse aide in the Pre/Post Op unit; and Jessica Duckworth of Port Huron is a Unit Secretary in the Observation Unit.
  • McLaren Port Huron Employee Scholarship:Sharon Kortas of East China is an Infection Control Practitioner and Cassandra Markel-Demianenko of St. Clair is a Medical Technologist in the Lab.
  • Theron and Eleanor Godbold Scholarship: Amy Podgorski of Yale is a RN in the Mental Health Unit, April Schomaker of Wales is a Surgical Tech Lead, Jennifer VanTiem of Cottrellville Township is Supervisor of 6 East, and Brenda Wright of Kimball is a Case Manager at the Yale Veteran’s Clinic.
  • Shirley Jardine Carter Memorial Physical Therapy Scholarship:Samantha Charney of Avoca, Ryan Davis of Wayland, Jenna Page of Port Huron is completing her final internship with MPH, and Megan Weaver of Marysville.
  • Karen Susan Draper Memorial Scholarship:Marwood Nursing & Rehab employees receiving the scholarships are Sabrina Bahnweg of Marysville is a CNA, Michelle Cowan of Port Huron is a LPN, Shawna Jakush of Port Huron is a LPN, Emily Kellet-Dazer of Port Huron is a RN, Lauren Leggett of Memphis is a CNA, and Julie Markey of Marysville is a CNA.
