McLaren Port Huron is a 186-bed non-profit hospital located in Port Huron, Michigan, with a strong history of providing quality, compassionate care to residents living in St. Clair and Sanilac counties. It has earned repeated recognition for both clinical excellence and patient safety from nationally renowned health care rating organizations. McLaren Port Huron provides a full range of services, including cardiovascular care, award-winning cancer services through the Karmanos Cancer Institute, orthopedic services, and general, bariatric and robotic-assisted surgeries. The hospital is nationally verified as a Level III Trauma Center and operates the busiest Emergency Department in St. Clair County. Other services include family birthing services and the only accredited sleep center in the region.

McLaren Port Huron History

More than 135 years ago, the people of Port Huron had a vision… the vision of providing the finest healthcare available to meet the needs of a growing community of 8,000 residents. Building on its proud beginnings as Port Huron Hospital and Home, McLaren Port Huron of today is a modern 186‑bed medical complex that offers a wide range of clinical, diagnostic, rehabilitative, therapeutic, supportive and educational services to the residents of St. Clair and Sanilac Counties.

    Founding Group

    A group of concerned citizens form plans to establish "Port Huron Hospital and Home."

  • 1882
    Hospital Built

    The first hospital is built in White Park to accommodate 15 patients.

  • 1900
    Upgrades

    Port Huron Hospital and Home installs electricity, replacing gas lights.

  • 1904
    Groundbreaking

    The cornerstone for the new hospital was laid during an impressive ceremony.

  • 1905
    New Hospital

    New 32‑bed hospital opens on Richardson Street. First baby born in the facility.

  • 1906
    Hospital Aid Society

    The Hospital Aid Society is organized; first Fiesta nets $150.

  • 1907
    Hospital Fiesta

    Over 5,000 attend the Second Annual Hospital Fiesta.

  • 1912
    Mortgage Burned

    The mortgage for the hospital is ceremonially burned on the grounds.

  • 1918
    Spanish Flu Epidemic

    Resources strained, but nurses handle the worst natural disaster of the 20th century.

  • 1918
    Bed Expansion

    The hospital enlarges by 18 beds; additional property purchased.

  • 1919
    Name Change

    Renamed from "Port Huron Hospital and Home" to "Port Huron Hospital."

  • 1920
    Joins Association

    Port Huron Hospital joins the Michigan Hospital Association.

  • 1922
    First X‑Ray

    Hospital acquires its first X‑ray equipment.

  • 1925
    First Lab

    The first laboratory is installed in the hospital.

  • 1930‑1937
    Major Expansion

    Board approves plan; new 105‑bed facility opens in Feb 1937.

  • 1949
    Jenks Unit

    Emergency Hospital for contagious diseases (Jenks Unit) transferred to Port Huron Hospital.

    Therapy & Laundry

    Adds Physical Therapy and Laundry departments.

  • 1949
    First Radiologist

    Hospital hires its first full‑time radiologist.

  • 1953
    North Addition

    A new 56‑bed addition is built north of the main building.

  • 1967
    Rad Tech School

    School of Radiologic Technology is established on campus.

  • 1972
    East Wing

    New east wing brings bed count to 250; adds Respiratory Care & Social Services.

  • 1973
    Alcohol Therapy

    Introduces Alcohol Therapy Services; ER coverage expands.

    Special Care Nursery

    Eight‑bed high‑risk nursery opens; Pediatrics reconfigured.

  • 1978
    Sixth Floor

    12‑bed ICU/CCU, 19‑bed step‑down, cardio‑pulmonary lab & conference room added.

    Parking & Plant

    New parking structure, power plant; hospital celebrates 100th & forms Blue Water Health Services.

    Renovations
