Our Community

Bad Axe serves as the county seat and is the largest community in Huron County, as well as a commercial center for the upper Thumb area.

Before the Civil War, the first widely used trail through the thumb area wilderness was being surveyed. Workers made camp and found a 'badly damaged axe'. Noted on the minutes of their survey and on a sign placed along the trail, Bad Axe was on the map and is used to this day.

Bad Axe is a community of just under 4,000 people located right in the heart of Huron County. Outside the city limits the area is surrounded by woods and farmland, and inside is a variety of restaurants, florists, parks, churches, hotels, and an abundance of small, locally owned businesses, with more opening all the time!

Just a short drive away is Lake Huron, which offers many recreational activities for all! Boating, fishing, hunting, golfing, and camping are just a few of the activities to take part in while in Michigan’s Thumb.
